ERC fraud? IRS wants enhanced review

The Internal Revenue Service placed a moratorium on Employee Retention Credit claims through the end of 2023 as it seeks to counter possible fraud in the program implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement released by the IRS found Here, IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel stated, “The IRS is increasingly alarmed about honest small business owners being scammed by unscrupulous actors, and we could no longer tolerate growing evidence of questionable claims pouring in. The further we get from the pandemic, the further we see the good intentions of this important program abused.”

Past blogs have mentioned companies popping up seemingly overnight offering to help you qualify for the ERC and process your claims for a percentage of the claim. Then they ride off into the sunset and you get audited without one defending your claim. Over the past several months radio advertisements, internet pop-ups, and television ads have exploded regarding the Employee Retention Credit. Remember folks, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
